The moat has finally given up its lotus. Your brother said it was a fool's errand, that lotus does not take to English water, but this morning I knelt on the wet stones of the old postern gate and found three pale cups floating where the drawbridge chains rust into the mud. I wrote the date on my cuff so I would not forget it.

The castle is as we left it, only quieter. Harrow's men pulled the last of the roof lead in '31, and the wind has been using the great hall as a chapel ever since. I have been lodging in the gatehouse with the Pennington boy who keeps the goats. Every evening he rows out to the middle of the moat to check the seed heads, as if they might wander off on their own.

Two buds opened in the night, and the third is still closed tight, hunched like a fist. Mrs Tully says the small dots beneath the stems must be left alone, that they are seed pods waiting for next summer. I have decided to believe her because I want to.

Come in August. Bring the good scissors and your stubborn temper. We will row out together and count the petals, and if the third one has not opened by then I will ask the boy to cut it for you, so you can press it into the back of your Bible, where you keep everything you refuse to forget.
