Compass rose on upper chest
Geometric · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink compass rose sits on the upper chest, close to the collarbone and shoulder, with N, E, S and W marked on its points. The design uses solid black points and a central ring with fine dotwork and stippled shading. It is shown in black and grey against pale skin and a dark top, with the framing cropped below the chin.

Hush now, and pass me that cup, the one with the chipped lip. Good. Listen, because I will not tell this twice and the fire is already tired of me. In the kingdom of Essmare, where the rivers ran uphill on feast days, there lived a mapmaker called Wenna Thorl, who had ink under every nail and no patience for anyone who asked her where north was.

The Admiralty had sent eleven ships past the Glass Shoals and not one had come home. The queen wanted a chart. Wenna drew one by lamplight for nine nights, and on the tenth she drew a rose at its centre, sixteen points thrown out like spears, each tip sharpened black, and in the middle a ring of dots so fine that her brass pen trembled to make them.
The queen's men laughed at the rose. 'North is north,' they said, 'and we have no time for pretty things.' Wenna only shrugged and kept her counsel. She had noticed that the dots in the ring were not scattered at random. Counted by lamplight, they made the same pattern as the stars above the harbour wall, and when she held the chart to the window and turned it slowly, the points lined up with a dark gap in the far water where no ship had yet thought to look.
They sailed by it, and they came home, all eleven, with their hulls split and their sailors singing badly. The queen had Wenna's name cut into the harbour wall, and I am told it is still there, though the sea has taken most of the letters. Some say the rose was magic. Wenna said only that she had counted the dots, and the stars had been waiting inside them all along. Now the cup is empty, and so am I.
