A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marek had opened forty crates that morning and found nothing but tinned peaches, a case of bad wine and a clock belonging to somebody's dead mother. The fifth-from-last crate held a tin with a cracked wax seal, and inside it, seeds the colour of old piano keys. The declaration said birdseed. Birdseed does not come sealed in wax.

He carried the tin into the back room where the kettle lived. Outside, the river ran brown under the bridge, carrying the silt of three countries, and a gull stood on the rail as if it had paid duty on its own feathers. He thought about his grandmother's drained marsh, where she swore lotus once opened on the black water every July, clean and unbothered by the mud it had climbed through.

He filled a saucer with tap water, dropped one seed in, and set it on the windowsill. On the manifest he wrote held for inspection, and under it, in smaller letters, mud is not a crime. Then he initialled the form and sat with his tea going cold, watching the glass as the afternoon lorries queued and honked.

By morning the seed had split. A green tongue stood up from the saucer, folded in on itself, and was already reaching for the light. Marek did not throw it away. He stamped the tin cleared, passed it through, and let the driver take the whole crate on to the coast, where somebody would be waiting to ask about birdseed.
