Dotwork and fine line armband on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a forearm with two bands of black ink encircling it. A thin, solid black line sits above a wider band made of stippled dots that grow denser towards the bottom edge and fade out into the skin. The background is dark and softly lit, with a black top and a white feather motif in the upper left, keeping the focus on the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at Coldharbour hall let a partner leave the floor without a mark, and Old Sal Pennock was the one who made them. She kept a stub of soot in her apron and drew a single line above the elbow of every fiddler's boy who asked her for a tune, a line that meant he would come back for the last waltz. The line was for keeping the promise. The dark that came after was for the dancing itself.

The Baines boy came in the November of the great frost, in a hurry, and asked to be marked twice. Sal looked at him over her spectacles and said a man could only owe one thing at a time. He said he owed his sister a dance he had missed at the spring fair, and that he would dance it out before the lamps went down. So she drew the line, then pressed the soot through a square of linen so it fell in fine speckles, thick at the wrist and thinning toward the crook of the arm until it was only a breath on the skin.

He danced all night in the cold hall, and the floorboards rang under the feet of the whole parish. At the stroke of four his sister stepped into his arms, and the band of dots dulled to grey as the lamps guttered. By the time the cocks crowed the mark had sunk into the skin, and when Sal came down the stairs with her shawl over her head, the boy was asleep on a bench with one arm flung out, the thin line as clean as a fence post.
