Mrs Ivy Penhallow had reported the saucer to the parish newsletter on a Tuesday, and by Friday the whole of Dunmere Cross had an opinion about it. Most people thought it was the church roof lead, lifted by the gale and snagged on the weathervane. Constable Hale drove out to look and came back with a sandwich and no conclusions.

The object hung above the reservoir road for three nights, a flat black disc with a fat dome on top, perfectly still against the cloud. Ivy set a kitchen chair on her step with a flask and her late husband's binoculars, and she logged the times in a notebook with a faded tartan cover. On the fourth night the disc tilted, very slightly, as if someone had leaned on it from underneath.

Her grandson Owen drove up with a ladder and a bag of crisps, insisting there was a drone stuck in the branches of the sycamore. He climbed, squinted, and came down pale. "It's painted on," he said. "Someone's painted a saucer on the sky." Ivy didn't believe him until he showed her the photograph on his phone, where the shape had a crease along its rim exactly like the tide line on the reservoir wall.

They never found the man who had painted it. In March the reservoir dropped low enough to show the old village road, and in the mud at the water's edge lay a dented tin tray, dome side up, which Owen swore had not been there the week before. Ivy took the chair back inside, wrote the date in the tartan notebook, and left the flask on the step for whoever came looking next.
