Floral tattoos on raised arms
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A back view of a person with grey dreadlocks, both arms raised to hold their hair. Tattoos cover the forearms and upper arms, with red and pink flowers and green leaves on the left arm and darker linework on the right. The dark sleeveless top and denim shorts are plain, and the background is a neutral grey studio backdrop.

The camellia had been sulking since the February frost, and Mr Pardoe would let no one near it but me. I kept the glasshouse at Trewint for eleven years before the new owners came up from London with their ledgers and their talk of heating pipes. They wanted the orchids moved to the south range and the old vines pulled out for something they called a conservatory of ideas. I said nothing. I went on watering at six each morning, the way my father taught me, with the can held low so the soil does not splash the leaves.

On the Thursday the stove failed. By dawn the glass was furred with white and the paraffin smell had got into my coat. I found the young scarlet fuchsias still breathing, pink at the throat, and I wrapped them in sacking and carried them to the potting shed one armful after another, while the boy from the village held the lamp. Mr Pardoe came down in his nightshirt and stood in the doorway counting pots as though they might multiply under his eye.
By Michaelmas the camellia flowered anyway, in the cold, against every sense of its nature. Three blooms the colour of bruised plums, and a bronze leaf curled at the edge of each. Mr Pardoe wrote to London to say the house would stay as it was. He did not write to me. He left a sprig of the flower on the potting bench, tied with green wool, and I have it still, pressed inside the back of the seed book where my father's handwriting runs down the margins.
