Lotus within a brush circle

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A stylised lotus with layered, pointed petals sits at the lower centre of a large circle formed by a dense, feathered black brush stroke. The petals are outlined and partly shaded in black and white, with the open gaps of the brush stroke around the top and sides. The design is shown in black and white on a plain white background.

My master, Hori, would not let me lift the brush until the circle was finished. He said a ring drawn in two breaths is two lies stitched together. We worked in the shade of the workshop wall at Thebes, where the Nile's cool smell crept up through the reed mats, and our ink was soot ground in gum water.

The lotus was his subject, the flower that sleeps under the water at night and lifts its petals at dawn. He drew the petals first, layer over layer, each one pointed like the tip of a fishing spear, and shaded their undersides so the blossom seemed to lean out of the dark. My task was the ring around it. I had a cup of ink, a brush of cat-hair, and a hand that had never been trusted with anything larger than a cartouche.

On the third morning a hot wind came off the river and blew grit across the plaster. I dipped, I pulled, and the stroke frayed at its edge like wet linen. Hori studied it for a long time. Then he laughed, took the brush from my fingers, and finished the rest in one turn, letting the bristles lift so the gaps opened where the ink ran thin.

That evening he showed me why. The gaps, he said, were where the light got in, and a lotus needs air to open. When the sun slanted through the doorway the ragged ring glowed grey and the black petals sat inside it like something that had decided to wake. I have made many circles since, and every one of them has a place where I let it breathe.
