Lotus flower line drawing on paper
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing of a lotus flower sits on a sheet of white paper, with pointed outer petals, inner petals and a layered scalloped base. The linework is a single consistent outline with no shading or fill. The flower is centred in the frame, and a hand holding the paper is partly visible at the left edge.

Ysolde, the cistern on Halden Ring has finally given up its last drop, so I am writing this by the light of the seed-lamp you left me, the one with the brass petals that never quite close. The engineers came through on Tuesday with their tablets and their long faces and told me the hydroponic bay will be sealed by the new cycle. Forty years of tomatoes and beans, and they want to turn the whole deck into a dormitory for the Vesper crew.

I went down to the bay this morning and sat under the outer ring of the lotus panel you painted on the bulkhead before you were transferred to the Dunmore. Every line of it is one unbroken stroke, the way you always insisted. Petal, petal, petal, then the scalloped base that curls round like water settling. You said a line that never lifts from the surface can carry a thing from one end of a ship to the other without a single break in it. I thought that was nonsense when you said it. This morning I put my palm flat over the inner petals and felt the cold of the wall come up through my glove, and I thought, she was right, and she is somewhere out past the belt with no way of telling me so.
I have cut the lamp's cord and taken the seed-pod from the north tray. It is the last of the blue ones. I am going to plant it in the old sump behind the pumps, where nobody will think to look, and I am leaving you the instructions folded inside this letter. Water it when the lamp goes amber. It will open when it likes.
