Lotus flower on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower drawn in fine black linework sits on the inner wrist, its petals filled with small hatched and dotted patterns. Two dots sit above and below the flower, in line with its centre. The ink is dark and even against the skin, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a blurred green plant background.

"Mr Aldous wanted the lace pattern by Friday, and I had given him the lotus three times already, each time with the petals a shade too tidy. He held the sheet up to the window of the works office and sighed at it the way men sighed at weather. "It's a water flower, Miss Pell. Make it look like it's come up out of something."

So I went down to the millpond after my shift, where the reeds stood black in the evening and the coots went about their business. I sat on the wooden stile with my tin of pencils and drew what I saw: the cupped petals lifting over the scum, each one hatched with fine lines so it held its own light, a little dotted border where the water took the edge. The flower sat above the mud as though mud had never once been its business.
Back at the works I pinned the drawing beside the loom and worked the design in hatch and dot, petal after petal, until the old pattern book was full of nothing else. Mr Aldous never said it was right. He simply took the sheet, folded it once along the centre, and pricked two small holes with the point of his compass, one above and one below, where the stem would meet the frame. "There," he said. "Now it can breathe." I still think of that fold whenever I see a flower that has come up clean out of something muddy."
