Small lotus outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a lotus flower with pointed petals sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The thin black linework is uniform and unshaded, and the design is set against plain skin. The arm rests against a pale grey wall, with a patterned sleeve and knitted cuff at the top left and edge of the frame.

The moat had been dry for sixty winters when Ada Penhallow went down the broken steps with a bucket and came back up with a flower in it. Nobody in Caddick Hollow believed her until the lord's steward went down to see for himself, and he came back up grey in the face, carrying nothing, only saying that the mud at the bottom was warm to the touch and that the flower stood in it like a lamp.

The castle had been a ruin since the great fire, when the last Lady Gorran burned her hall rather than give it to the crown. People said she had gone down into the moat with her jewels and never come up. The village kept the gate shut and the sheep out, and children dared each other to throw stones at the north tower. Ada, who mended nets and had no patience for dares, took the bucket down every morning for a week.
On the seventh morning the flower had opened into eight pointed petals, each edged in a line so fine that the steward swore they had been drawn rather than grown. Ada carried it home in a jug. Her husband Tam said the thing would die in the cold, and it did not. It shut its petals at dusk and opened them at first light, and wherever its shadow fell on the kitchen flags, a little frost melted.
The winter the river froze to the bed, the village went hungry, and Ada carried the flower back down to the moat and set it on the lowest step. In spring the lord's men found the steps clear of ice and a ring of green shoots spread around the place. Nobody ever saw Ada come up again. Each year after, the moat ran full, and the lotus bloomed on the water with its petals drawn in one unbroken line.
