Lotus mandala on the inner upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical lotus flower sits at the centre, with layered petals, inner scrolls and a pointed base. Dotted chains with small droplet shapes hang beneath it, and a few dots sit above the top petal. The fine black linework and dot accents are set against plain, lightly lit skin with a blurred studio background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The miller's daughter was promised to the boatman's son the spring the river rose over the weir, and by the week of the wedding the whole valley was talking about the lamp her mother had ordered from the coppersmith in Hallow Ford. It was a lotus, the old woman said, hammered thin and pierced with a hundred small holes, so that when the candles burned inside it the light would spill across the table like water over stones.

The coppersmith, Edric Vane, took three months over it and charged less than the work was worth. He carried it up the lane in a sack on the eve of the wedding and found the bride sitting on the mill step with her feet in the cold race. She turned the lamp over in her lap and asked why he had hung little silver drops from its base on chains no longer than a finger. He said that a flower which had been rained on ought to show it, and that the drops would catch the lamplight and keep it moving even when the room was still.

At the feast the candles were lit and the drops swung and shivered, and the boatman's mother, who had never liked the match, said a lotus grew out of mud and had no business at a dry table. The bride said nothing. She waited until the fiddles stopped and the guests had gone home, then carried the lamp to the window and hung it from the beam by its own ring.

In the morning there was a ring of water on the boards beneath it, where the last drops had fallen, and the bride was already out at the weir with a bucket, filling it for the day's washing.
