Outline lotus flower on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower is drawn in a single black outline on the inner forearm of a person with light skin. The petals are built from simple angular and curved lines, with the central bud and layered outer petals separated by consistent line weight. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the flower is centred against a plain, softly lit background.

The dance hall at Hallow Mere had a floor so well waxed that the boys slid across it in their boots, and a band that came out on the carrier's cart every second Saturday. Nobody thought much of the pond behind it, a brown scrape of water where the cows came down to drink. Then in the wet summer, a bloom pushed up through the weed, one bud at first. Old Tom Roake, who swept the hall, said it was a lotus. That was nonsense, the village said, because nothing grows like that in Norfolk mud.

Dora Finch worked the cloakroom and was the first to see it open properly. Each morning she counted another layer of petals, sharp at the edges, drawn in black silt lines that the rain never washed away. She told the band leader, Lennox Gray, that the pond was keeping time. He laughed and said the only thing keeping time was his drummer, who was always late.
When the drain men came to lay new pipes for the dance floor, Lennox meant to have the bloom dug out with the weeds. Dora stood in the mud with her shoes off and asked him to wait until the harvest dance. He agreed, mainly to be rid of her. That night the fiddler played the slow tune his mother had written, and the bud, which had stayed shut all summer, lifted its outer petals one by one until the whole flower sat on the water like a lamp.
No one danced after that. They stood at the back door with their hands in their pockets and listened to the pond. Tom left the door open every Saturday, and the music went out across the water, and the flower stayed open for as long as the fiddle kept on.
