Lotus flower with Om symbol design

Botanical · Colour · Flash

A drawn tattoo design of a lotus flower with layered petals, shaded in pink, magenta and purple, with a dark Om symbol at the top. Swirling black linework extends from the flower and the Om, with small dotted accents on either side. The design is centred on a plain peach background with a soft lighter glow behind the flower.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learn the pond before you learn the boats. Mrs Oonagh Restarick, who keeps the ferry shed on Inchmurra, makes you kneel at the edge each morning with your sleeves rolled and your palms flat on the cold lip of the stone trough, and listen. The lotus here opens late, in July, once the gulls have stopped squabbling over fish guts on the slipway. Its roots go down through black silt that smells of iron and old rain.

She hums a single low note while she works, the one that rises from the throat and seems to hang over the water like a second sky. You try it, and she laughs and says you sound like a kettle that has lost its nerve. Ferry bookings come by telephone and the boat goes out twice a day whatever the weather. But the pond is hers, and the flowers come up pink at the centre, magenta at the tips, purple where the petals fold back into the dark.

In the autumn she gives you the key to the shed and not the boat. You are sure there has been a mistake until she shows you the ledger, pages of dates in her square hand, each one a bloom she counted. "Nobody else ever noticed the spirals," she says, tapping a petal that curls like a fern. "You will."

The next July you open the shed at five, kneel, and hum the low note. The first bud has split overnight. You watch the ripple from your breath run out across the water to the reeds, and then, for the first time, you write the date in the ledger yourself.
