Om symbol design

Black and grey · Flash

A single bold black Om symbol, the Devanagari character with its crescent, dot and upward curves, centred on a white background. The shapes are solid fills with smooth, even edges and no shading, so it reads as a clean outline design. There is no skin, body part or colour ink visible.

Dear Ines, the hum came back on the third day of the long night, low as a kettle in another room. Father Oyelaran says it is only the aft pumps, but he is wrong. I stood in the hydroponic bay with my palm flat against the bulkhead and felt the shape of it, three sounds sliding into one, the way the old teachers taught us on the lower decks: a, then u, then m, and then the silence that holds the rest.

The elders say the curl at the top is where the sound folds back into quiet, and the dot above it is the point where a thought stops being a thought. The first archivists painted it on every hatch so the crew would know which corridors still had sweet air. Most of those hatches have been repainted grey since, but the symbol is still there under the paint if you know where to scrape.

Yesterday I found one in the cargo lock, black paint worn thin under a bloom of mould. I scrubbed it with my sleeve until the lines came up clean. Nobody asked me why I was doing it, and I did not explain. I think the ship only wanted reminding that it can still be spoken.

Tonight I will sit in the dark beside the pumps and make the sound with my lips closed, letting it drop into the silence afterwards. If the Ceres relay ever wakes up, write to me and tell me whether your water tastes of iron too. Love, Maren.
