The pond froze on the Tuesday after you left, thick enough that the ducks walked across it looking offended. I broke a hole with the dairy hammer so they could drink, and that's where I thought of the seed head your grandfather pulled from the silt in August, dried now to a black cup with a spiral on its face. I've put it on the windowsill above the range, where the heat keeps the frost off the glass.

The fire has been a bad-tempered thing this month. Every morning I riddle the grate and the flames curl up in the same shapes that rise off the top of that seed head, and I stand there with my tea going cold, thinking of you at the back of the bus with your rucksack on your knees. The bindweed on the back fence has gone to brown rope, and it still reaches down the post to the gate, tying itself in little knots as if it means to keep the gate shut.

Mr Fenwick from the mill came asking after the barley money, and I told him it would come in spring, which is the only honest answer I've got. He looked at the seed head on the sill and said his mother used to hang them over the door to keep the winter off. I didn't tell him I had no idea whether that was true, only that it gave me something to do with my hands.
