Lotus mandala with watercolour splashes on forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A lotus flower drawn in black linework sits at the centre of the design, with petals, scrolled ornaments and a row of dangling charms beneath it, including small stars, moons and drops. Soft watercolour splashes in teal, pink, blue and yellow spread behind and around the lotus, while the black lines remain crisp. The tattoo is photographed straight on along a forearm against a dark background.

Her son Tobin went up there at the end of the harvest with a bag of charms he had strung from copper wire: small stars, crescent moons, drops of glass the colour of rain. He hung them from a pole over the water, one at a time, and named each one after a debt. The bread he had taken from the miller. The lie he told his sister about the goat. The night he left the gate open.

The flower did not move while he hung them. When the last charm swung still, the petals lifted one by one, outlined in black ink as if someone had drawn them with a fine pen, and the coloured runoff from the weir bled out across the pond in ribbons behind them.

Tobin walked home without the bag. His mother was waiting at the lock with a bowl of soup and no questions, and she said only that the river had run clear by morning, which it had.
