A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lotus pond at the edge of Hollin Wood had never frozen, though every winter the villagers swore it would. Old Maud Tarrant kept the reeds cut back and the sluice clear, and in return the pond gave her the first pale bloom each spring, which she carried to the chapel and left on the step without a word.

One November the bloom did not come. The petals had folded shut in the night and stayed shut, and the reeds around them bent low as if listening for something under the water. Maud went down with a lantern and a hook and found the crescent of black stones that ringed the pond had shifted, leaving a gap the width of a child's arm. Through it, far down, a glimmer moved like a fish turning over.

She sat on the cold bank until the moon came up thin over the trees. Then she took the stars from her apron pocket, the three brass ones her husband had bought at the fair and the scatter of glass beads she had never found a use for, and dropped them one by one into the gap. The water swallowed each with a small sound. When the last bead sank, the lotus opened all at once, petal over petal, lit from within.

In the morning there was a bloom on the chapel step, and beside it three small brass stars, dry as bread.
