Lotus in a geometric diamond on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single lotus flower in outline sits above a pointed diamond shape formed by two triangles, with a small dot and a short tick mark at the top and bottom of the design. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading, and the design is centred on the side of the ribcage. The skin is pale and the background is dark blue, with the subject's arm raised above the tattoo.

The pen had to be a hair's width, Mr Halloran said, because the drawing would go down to the laser men at Dewsbury and anything fatter would throw the frame out by a millimetre. Nell didn't argue. She had been drafting for the glasshouse works since March, copying the old iron ventilators from the Winter Garden plans onto vellum, and she had learned that the heritage people wanted their symmetry kept like a promise.

The panel she was finishing was the last of the set, a diamond formed from two triangles with a lotus resting on its point. The original had been cast in 1887 and nobody had ever measured the petals, so she had measured them herself over three evenings with a magnifier and a flask of cold tea. Each petal came out a little different from the last. She drew the small centre dot where the compass had slipped, and a tick at the base where the old draughtsman had pressed too hard and left a dent in the paper.
On the Friday, Halloran laid the sheet against the brass template and found the set square true to a tenth. He tapped the lotus with his pencil. 'That's not right,' he said. 'Too round.' She looked at it for a long time. The petals were the only part of the whole panel that had been made by hand, and the iron had kept their wobble for a hundred and thirty years.
She said nothing and let him take the sheet to Dewsbury. Two weeks later a box arrived with a cut copy of the panel. The lotus had come out exactly as she drew it, rounded and a little uneven, and it hung above the bench where the morning light fell through it in a diamond of thin shadows.
