Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of three mushrooms with gills and stems sits inside a large faceted, diamond-shaped outline. The linework is black and fine, with dotted and hatched shading on the mushroom stems and caps. The design is shown straight on against a pale background, with the skin fairly close to the frame.

Mind the step, it's loose, same as the gate and my knees. Now, where was I? Ah yes, Ned Tallow and the stone. Ned dug a lump of clear quartz out of the south wall of the Pennick garden in the spring of the hard frost, and it was so cold to hold that his palm stuck to it the way a wet glove sticks to a railing. He carried it indoors wrapped in his mother's apron and set it on the kitchen windowsill, and by the Thursday three mushrooms had come up inside it.

They weren't the sort you'd put in a pan. Gills like the pleats of a good linen skirt, caps the colour of weak tea, stems as fine as knitting needles. Ned's wife Hetty swore they'd come up through the crack in the glass, and Ned said no, they'd come up through the facets, one face at a time, the way a sum comes out when you stop counting. Every morning the three of them stood a little taller, and every morning the sharp edges of the stone seemed to have moved a finger's width further across the table, as if the room were being measured for something.

Hetty wanted it out of the house. Ned wouldn't have it. They quarrelled over it for a whole month, and the frost came back in March, the way it does when it's been asked nicely to leave. Then one night the mushrooms began to push at the crystal from the inside, and the cold stopped at the windowsill as if it had walked into a wall of glass. The garden kept its apples that year. Ned said the stone had only been holding something in, and the mushrooms had only been holding the stone.

So when you go past the Pennick wall, look at the south face. You'll see the lines of the crystal pressed into the brick where the stone used to sit, sharp as a pencil drawing and twice as stubborn. Don't pick anything growing there. Ned's in the ground under it now, and I'm told he keeps his bargain better than most.
