Shaded lotus flower on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey lotus flower sits on the outer forearm, with its layered petals drawn as outlined shapes. The shading looks stippled, building soft gradients from dark centres to lighter outer edges. The tattoo sits centrally on the arm against a pale skin background and a dark wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lotus had been planted by a man who never saw it open, and Ada had kept it alive for thirty-one years on the strength of that fact alone. Every August the pond in the walled garden at Thorne Hollow filled with pale cups on black stems, and every August she told the vicar's wife the same story: that the seed had come in a tin from Calcutta, folded inside a letter that said only *Patience*. Nobody believed the letter. Ada kept it in her apron pocket anyway, soft as cloth from handling.

This year the heat sat over the fen for six weeks and the pond shrank to a brown oval ringed with cracked clay. Ada waded in with the long rake and felt through the silt for the tubers, knobbed and heavy as knuckles. Her grandson Samir came down the path with a bucket and asked whether they could just leave them to sleep through the winter. She told him the frost would split them, and that the thing had to come out of the mud and be kept dry in sacking before anyone could trust it again.

The biggest tuber came up last, pale at the cut end and furred with roots. Ada knelt on the boards and cracked it open with her thumbnail. Inside it was green, wet and sweet-smelling, and she sat back on her heels and laughed until Samir asked if she had hurt herself. "Nothing," she said. "It's only been waiting longer than I gave it credit for."

They set the tubers in a tin bath on the kitchen sill, where the morning light came in low. By October the water outside had gone cold and grey, but on the sill one shoot had already lifted a curled leaf above the rim. Ada tucked the letter behind the bath, where the sun could not fade the ink, and went to put the kettle on.
