Lotus mandala across upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A large lotus flower with shaded red, orange and yellow petals sits at the centre of a symmetrical mandala with paisley-style linework and small dots. The fine outlines are dark red, and the petals use soft gradient shading to create depth. The design fills the upper back, centred on the spine, with the neck and bra strap visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The year the mill pond dried to cracked clay, the children of Fenwick School were told to bring something to the reunion that had once belonged to the water. Nobody knew who had started the rule. Old Tamsin Crake, who had taught them all their letters, said it was only manners, and so forty-one grown people came back to the village hall carrying jam jars, bent spoons and a lamp that still smelled of paraffin.

Dennis Harrow, who had been the worst boy in the class and was now the mildest man in the parish, carried in a flat grey stone with a lotus scratched into it. He set it on the trestle beside the urn. Nobody had seen a lotus in Fenwick. Tamsin looked at it for a long while, then said her own mother had told her the flower opened only where a thing had been forgiven, and that it would stay open for as long as the forgiving lasted.

They talked until the tea went cold. Dennis apologised to a woman he had pushed into the nettles in 1961, and she laughed and handed him a custard cream. Each time someone said a true thing, a petal of red light rose through the stone, faint as embers under ash, and spread outward in rings of small dots until the whole hall was patterned with shadows on the whitewash.

By midnight the stone glowed orange at the rim and gold at the heart. Tamsin wiped the window with her sleeve and looked out at the pond, where water had gathered in the hollow again, shallow and bright. She said nothing about it. In the morning the flower had closed, but the mud beneath the window had gone soft, and a single dark leaf was pushing up through it.
