Lotus mandala on the chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical lotus mandala sits centrally on the upper chest, with pointed petals layered over a scalloped lower band. The design is built from fine linework and stippled dotwork, with grey shading giving the petals depth. The tattoo is set against plain skin and fills most of the frame.

The chart room of the Halcyon Mary smelled of lamp oil and wet wool, and by the third week out from Falmouth the brass dividers had gone green at the hinge. I had the navigator's berth only because old Pritchard had drowned his nerves in gin, not because I had any gift for numbers. What I had was a stubborn habit of drawing. I sketched the sea in graphite on the backs of spent log sheets, and the mate said it was the only useful thing I did.

The trouble began off the Cape Verde islands, when cloud sat over us for four days. Pritchard could not fix our position, the chronometer had stopped, and the captain wanted a bearing before the weather forced us to heave to. I took the silk shawl my sister had given me, spread it on the chart table, and studied the pattern printed into it: a lotus opening from its own centre, petal inside petal, each ring spaced exactly as the one before. A merchant in Bombay had sworn it was a map of the heavens. I had laughed at him.
I drew it out again, larger, on the chart. Every point of that flower held a true direction. The outer petals matched the points of the compass card, the inner ones sat at halfway angles, and so on down to a dot no bigger than a grain of salt at the heart. When the cloud broke at dawn, the Pole Star showed through the rigging. I laid my pencil on the drawing, matched it to the sky, and we made the anchorage by noon.
Pritchard woke sober the next morning and asked to see the shawl. He turned it over for a long time, then folded it back into its paper and handed it to me. 'Keep it,' he said. 'Some of us navigate by stars, and some by whatever keeps us from going round in circles.' I still have it, and the lotus is the first thing I look for whenever the ship goes quiet at night.
