Lotus mandala on the chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical lotus flower sits within a layered mandala, with petals, scalloped arches and a diamond-shaped fan extending down the chest. The design combines fine outlines with stippled dotwork shading that fills the petals and lower panels, creating depth without colour. The tattoo is centred on the frame, with the soft skin of the chest around it and a dark fabric bow above.

Mr Ashdown had counted the pinholes twice before he would let the card go down to the looms, and still the lotus came out lopsided on the left-hand scallop. Ruth Calloway pulled her stool closer to the bench and held the lamp at the angle she had learned from her mother, who had pricked cards for the same Nottingham firm for thirty years before her eyes gave out.

"It is symmetry, Miss Calloway, not sentiment," he said, tapping the margin with a ruler. "A flower that leans is a flower that falls."
She said nothing. The pattern was a mandala her father had sketched in the back of a ledger after a sailor brought a drawing home from Bombay, a lotus opening in rings of arches and fanning downward into a diamond of dots that thickened towards the hem. Every pinprick was a decision. Dense dots for shadow, sparse ones for light, so the paper itself seemed to darken and lift.
On the last evening before the card went to the mill, she found the error herself. It was not on the scallop but in the centre, where the bud sat. She had pricked the lowest petal a hair too deep, and the light fell through it like a window. Mr Ashdown would have the whole card reissued by morning.
She left it. She pricked a second bud beside the first, matched to it, and let the loom take the pattern as it was. Weeks later a length of lace came back from the warehouse with the same flaw woven in, two petals that caught the light differently, and nobody but her ever looked for it.
