Mandala tattoo on the side ribs
Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black mandala design sits on the side of the torso, with a central spiral surrounded by layered petal shapes and a fringe of small dots. The linework is fine and even, with dotwork shading used for texture around the outer points. The image is greyscale apart from the skin tones, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

The rosette was the only thing in Harrowgate Keep the damp had not got to. Petals first. Eight of them, then sixteen, each one fringed with a line of small pits where someone long dead had pressed a point into wet lime. At the centre sat a spiral that wound inward like a snail shell, and it was there I lost my nerve. My pencil kept drifting clockwise, correcting itself, drifting again. By the fourth day my fingers were grey to the knuckle and I had three tracings, and none of them agreed.
On the fifth morning the bell in the village below rang for a service nobody had announced, and the light came through the broken east window at an angle I had not seen before. The spiral threw a shadow the width of my hand. I turned the film over and laid it flat, and the shadow fell exactly where my pencil had gone wrong. The stone had not been cut to be read from above. It had been cut to be walked round, the way you walk round a well, and every mistake I had made was simply a step taken the wrong way.
I rolled up the film and left the graphite in its tin. Uncle Edwin can keep his river. I went in along the spiral on my knees, slowly, and the flags rose to meet me as if they had been waiting.
