Lotus mandala tattoo on the sternum
Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed lotus flower with layered petals and a central teardrop motif sits in the centre of the chest, framed by a vertical line of dots above and below. The linework is fine and the petals are filled with stippling, dotwork and hatched shading in grey. Small leaf outlines appear partly out of frame on the right, and a blue fabric covers the top of the image against plain skin.

Brother Tomas had pricked the same circle eleven times before the bell for Sext, and each time the compass point had wandered a hair to the left. The vellum was calfskin from the last slaughter at Michaelmas, thin as an eyelid, and every mistake showed through to the next leaf like a bruise.

He carried the sheet to the cloister, where Brother Edric sat by the lavarium with his good eye squeezed shut against the sun. The old man ran a thumb over the pinpricks without looking at them. "You are measuring the circle from the wrong place," he said. "You keep asking where the centre is, as if it were a stone you could find under the leaves."
Tomas said nothing. The abbey pond behind them held the lotus the Prior had carried home from a pilgrimage across the sea, a sad root wrapped in wet sacking, which had flowered only twice in forty years.
Edric pressed the dry end of his stylus into the last dot Tomas had made, at the very middle of the sheet. "There. Stop there. The centre is where your hand stopped shaking." Tomas began to protest, then saw that the point had held without wobbling for the first time all morning.
That spring the lotus opened in the pond on the feast of the Annunciation, pale and sudden as a held breath. Tomas drew its petals in dots and hatching that afternoon, and he did not measure the middle at all.
