Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Flash

A hand holds up a sheet of paper bearing a detailed ink drawing of a lotus flower built from layered petals, scrolls and paisley-like curls. Strings of small dots hang from the lower petals, and a few dots sit above the top of the flower. A small black swirl-knot tattoo is visible on the side of a finger in the bottom left, and the drawing is shown against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every morning before the bridge gate opened, Dalia unrolled her drawings on the wet planks at Sarn Crossing and waited for the guards to finish their tea. The river below ran brown and slow, and the lotuses growing in its shallows had petals packed so tightly that the old women said no two had ever opened alike. The guards wanted papers for everything, but they had no rule about flowers, so Dalia sold them flowers, one sheet at a time, and kept her own papers folded inside her shirt.

The sergeant, Tomas Vell, bought the sheet with the hanging strings on it. He said his wife had once lost a necklace in the ferry crossing and he wanted something on the wall to remind him of the weight of it. Dalia told him the dots were not pearls. They were counts, one for each thing a traveller had carried over and not declared. He laughed and paid her double. That night she heard him at the rail, moving his thumb along the air as if he were telling beads.

In the morning the sergeant came to her with the drawing folded small in his fist. The flood had taken the lower span, and the ferryman had not come back. He asked her, plainly, how a person was meant to cross now. Dalia took a stub of charcoal from her pocket and drew one more line, a string of dots running from the lotus's petals down into the water. Where the last dot touched the current, the river went pale and shallow, and a pale stone path showed beneath it. By noon there were footprints on the mud, and by dusk the lotus on the paper had opened another petal.
