A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferryman's daughter kept a lotus in a tin on the windowsill of the Salt Lamp, and every spring it opened a little earlier than the year before. Her father said the flower knew the tides better than any chart in the harbour office, and that was why he let her carry it aboard the Mireille on the crossing to the drowned islands. Nobody liked the drowned islands. The fishermen rowed past them with their eyes down.

On the third night the lamp went out in the galley and would not catch again. The mate said it was damp. The cook said it was the flower, that the petals were drinking the oil. Ilse said nothing, but she took the tin up onto the deck and held it under her coat, and when the wind swung round to the north-east she felt the stem lean the way a compass needle leans, toward a dark seam on the horizon where the sea went flat and silver.

They found the channel because of it. The stem curled like a fine-drawn ribbon, always turning back on itself, and where it bent the water ran smooth over a reef that would have opened the Mireille like a tin of sardines. Ilse dropped the flower over the rail at dawn, tied to a length of thread, and watched it float on the current toward the islands with its petals open to the sky.

When they reached the quay at Vell, the harbour master counted the crew twice and found them all. He never asked about the tin. It was years before Ilse learned that the lotus had been the only thing on board that could see the way through, and that her father had known it all along.
