Snow globe with mountains and cabin on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A snow globe sits at the centre of the design, containing a small cabin with a red roof, pine trees and snow-capped mountains under a speckled sky. Bold black outlines define the glass, base, leaves and two red and white flowers, with yellow centres and orange accents. The piece is coloured in greens, blues, reds, yellows and grey, and fills the frame on a fleshy calf.

Dearest Nell, the big top came down in Dunmow on Tuesday and I have been sitting on a crate by the lorry ever since, holding the snow globe you posted me from Harrogate before the wagons were sold. Don't scold me for keeping it. The paper inside the lid still smells of your cigarettes, and that is more than the company has left.

The cabin is the one with the red roof, the one Tobias said was too small to be a proper winter quarters. Every night I shake the glass and watch the flakes settle on the mountains, then on the pines, then on the chimney, and I think about how the Mendozas' horses used to stand in straw up to their fetlocks while we cursed the damp. The flowers painted round the base have not faded at all. Only the snow is ever really new.

Mr Calloway has offered to take the lot of us to a field outside Ely for the winter, on the condition we sell the rest of the rigging for scrap. I said I would think about it. I have thought about nothing else for three days.

If the bank asks whose cabin it is, tell them it belongs to whoever is still awake when the last flake lands. I will be. Shake it for me when you get the chance, and count the pines until the lorry starts.
