Black line flower and paisley design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a cluster of five-petal flowers with centred dots, leaf shapes, curling vines and paisley-style swirls arranged in a sweeping diagonal. Linework is uniform black ink on white, with dotted and hatched fills in the leaves and teardrop shapes. No colour, shading or body part is shown, so it reads as a standalone design sheet.

Inspector Hanna Roske had worked the Tilbury freight shed for eleven years, and she could usually tell a forged invoice from a true one by the way the ink sat on the paper. The sheet in the blue folder was different. It was a drawing in black ink on cheap white card: five-petalled flowers clustered in one corner and spilling down the page in a long diagonal, paisley swirls curling off them like smoke.

The man who had brought it through the green lane, a courier named Tomasz Vey with one shoe split at the toe, said it was a pattern for a bridal veil. He had carried it from Lahore rolled inside a tube of tissue paper, and he needed it stamped before the wedding on Saturday. Hanna asked him to point to the veil. He pointed to the vines. She asked where the rest of the veil was. He said the rest was in his sister's head.
She held the card to the light. Beneath the paisley, pressed faintly through the paper, someone had written a sum in pencil and then scratched it out. Beside the dotted leaves, a second hand had sketched a tiny map of a river crossing with a bridge marked in three neat strokes. Hanna did not believe in omens, but she believed in the patience of people who drew things by hand. Nobody worked this carefully on a veil they could buy by the metre.
She stamped the form and slid the folder back across the counter. "Tell your sister the swirls are very fine," she said. Vey looked at the card for a long moment, then at her, and smiled as though she had handed him something he had been waiting a long time to receive. He walked out into the rain with the flowers still curling under his arm.
