Lotus, rose and peony tattoos on torso
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A selfie of a torso in a black bikini showing several black and grey tattoos. The main piece is a lotus flower with shaded petals and fine dotted detail on the chest and upper abdomen, with a rose on the upper arm and a peony on the hip. The shading is soft and grey-toned, and a small piece of fine-line script sits near the sternum.

The lotus here does not open in one motion. Each ring comes up slowly, grey at the tips where the sun has not yet reached, and in the hollows the water holds a fine dust of pollen that I can only render as dots, hundreds of them, pressed in with the nib until my wrist aches.

The Queen's clerk came down yesterday asking why I have not sent the roses for the eastern wall. I told him the roses are sulking because the frost came early, and the peonies have been stubborn since the rains. He did not laugh. He asked for the drawing instead, the one for the mandala garden, and I told him it was not finished. It will not be finished until I understand how the centre of the flower holds its shape while everything around it falls away.
This morning I found the answer under the old sluice gate: a snail shell turned upward in the mud, its spiral packed with silt and one white seed. I have pinned it to the page beside the lotus. Tell the clerk the drawing is done. Tell the Queen the peonies can wait another season. I am going down to the water again, and this time I will take the ink that does not smear.
