By the time the mist lifted off the pond at Hollin Court, Nell had already scrubbed the last of the rust from the gate and laid out her grey washes on a board. Gerrit Vos stood beside her with his cap pushed back, watching her work the brush the way he watched the frost leave the lawn, sure it would not be hurried.

The design was his, though he would never admit it. Years before, he had sketched lotus heads on the backs of seed packets, then swirls like fiddleheads that curled out of their stems. Nell had cut them into the iron so the shadow fell in soft bands, and the scrolls looked lifted from water. 'Keep the centres dark,' he said. 'The flowers grow out of the mud, not the light.'

They worked until the bell in Bramley rang four. Between coats Nell found a root in the silt dredged from beside the wall, pale and knotted like a string of beads, and she held it up to him. He took it, turned it over, then set it on the gatepost where the sun could reach it. 'Every flower on that gate came from something under the water,' he said. 'Nobody sees the roots, so we paint the blooms.'

When the paint dried, the gate swung without a sound. Nell fastened the latch, and the scrollwork caught the afternoon light in grey bands, and for a moment the pond seemed to be sending its flowers up through the iron.
