Lotus tattoo on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind with both hands raised to her head, wearing a white scoop-back tank top and several bracelets. A fine-lined lotus flower sits centrally on her upper back, its petals outlined and filled with dot shading. A short vertical line of dots runs below the flower. The image is black and white, with soft background lighting that keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Sit down, the lot of you, the 7.14 is running forty minutes late and it will not hurry for your sighing. Mind the tea urn. Now, you asked about the ticket office, and that means you'll hear about Mrs Ada Pringle, who punched tickets at Hallam Junction for thirty-one years with a brass punch shaped like a lily. Not a rose, mind. A lotus, she called it, because a man on the Eastern line had once brought her a seed packet from India and she never got over it.

Every ticket she clipped left a dotted line of little holes across the card, and she swore those holes were the only honest thing a railway ever made. A dotted line tells you where to tear, she said. Nobody argues with a dotted line.
One February the snow came in sideways and the Leeds express stopped short of the platform with a carriage full of soldiers on leave and nobody to take their tickets. Ada walked the length of the train in her thin coat, punching nothing, just counting faces and writing names on the inside of her cuff with a stub of pencil. By dawn every man had a name, a seat and a route home, and the stationmaster swore she'd been keeping the lot in her head all along.
She was buried in a plain box, but her punch went to the signal box, where it sits still. If you look at the top of the lever frame you'll find a lily worn into the brass, with a little row of dots running beneath it like a track going somewhere. Mind your step on the way out. The next one's yours.
