A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The plumb line had been knotted wrong for three days, and Dorrie Haskell would not let the boy take the Marigold out until he had it right. Every hand's breadth of the cord carried a small kink of red thread, so the fathoms could be counted in the dark. Tom picked at the knots with cracked fingers while the gulls fought over the cod heads on the slip. "Your father never needed thread," he said. "He had the sea in his head." Dorrie did not look up. "Your father lost two boats to the sea in his head."

She had drawn the flower on the back of an old tide chart years before, a lotus with layered petals, the kind she had seen painted on a Chinese tea tin in a shop in Hull. Her brother had sent it home from a voyage east, saying the things grew in mud and opened clean every morning. Nobody on the quay believed him. The dotted line she had added beneath it was meant to be the line that ran down from a float into deep water, the way the men marked where the good ground lay.

Tom went out at first light and came back before noon with nothing but grey silt in the net and a face like a shut door. Dorrie walked him past the fish market to the old dock pond, where the tanks overflowed in summer and the water went green. In the middle of it, against all reason, a single pale flower was open, its petals stacked like the drawing on the chart.

"Mud," Tom said, and then, more quietly, "Clean."

Dorrie tied the next knot herself, tight and true, and let the line run out over the side.
