Love will tear us apart lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare forearm, with the words LOVE WILL TEAR US APART set in stacked, bold block capitals. The lettering is solid black ink with crisp edges, and the arm is lit against a dark, blurred background with a sleeve visible at the top right. The composition is tight and centred on the tattoo.

The lift at Calder House had been dead since Easter, so Nell and I carried the cassette player down the eleven flights between us, one of us always stopping on the landing to swear. She had a suitcase balanced on her hip, the good one with the broken catch held shut by a belt.

Somebody had painted the words on the stairwell wall outside flat fourteen, LOVE WILL TEAR US APART, the letters stacked one above another like a row of tower blocks in miniature. Nell said it was a bit much for a stairwell that smelt of bleach and wet coats. I said it was the only true thing anyone had written in the building since the council came round with their clipboards. We had argued about those lines for most of a year, the way you argue about a song you both know by heart.
At the ground floor the door stuck. I put the player down and leaned on it with my shoulder until the cold came in off the car park, orange under the sodium lamps. Nell didn't move. She looked back up the stairwell at the black capitals and said she had never once believed it, that it was a line you painted on a wall so you could feel something on the way to the bins.
I picked the player up again. The tape was still inside, pressed down with a biro so it wouldn't fall out. Neither of us said goodbye. We walked out into the car park with the music starting halfway through the first verse, and behind us the stairwell light clicked off one floor at a time until only the words were left in the dark.
