Lowercase hiv lettering with arrow on abdomen
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of bold, lowercase black lettering reading "hiv" on pale skin, with a small heart-shaped dot over the i. A thin, curved black line with an arrowhead extends to the left from the letters. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the tattoo sits above a dark waistband and clothing at the bottom of the frame.

The skipper painted the name himself, the spring the Morag Dee went to the breakers, using a tin of grey he'd been saving for something he never got round to. Nobody on the quay could tell me what the letters stood for. Hugh only tapped the side of his nose and said the boat knew her own name, which was more than the rest of us could claim in a fog.

We worked out of Fraserburgh that year with eleven boats, and the Hiv was the one the others watched. She was small and low and always seemed to know where the herring had gone before the sounder did. Hugh kept a pencil arrow on the chart table, a thin curve pointing west, and when the rest of the fleet argued he would draw it again, neat as a surveyor, and we would steam where it pointed.
In February the swell came up out of nowhere and we lost the light by three. Hugh didn't call for the lifejackets. He stood in the wheelhouse with the radio hissing and said, quite calmly, that the fish were under the lee of the Buchan bank and we would be there before the tide turned. We were. The nets came up silver and heavy, and the others came in behind us through the spray like ducklings.
When we tied up, the paint on the wheelhouse had run in one place, a dark drip above the second letter. Hugh looked at it for a long while, then said he'd leave it, since the boat had carried worse and never once lost her way.
