Small hand sign with heart on the palm

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo shows a stylised hand sign, with three upright strokes, a thin vertical stroke, and a heart shape at the base of the hand. The linework is simple and uniform, with solid black ink and no shading. The tattoo sits centrally on a warm-toned palm, with the skin lines visible around it.

The vicar at Sallow Fen had married forty couples and never once been kept waiting for the words. Ada Pole stood at the altar rail with her hands folded and said nothing at all. The congregation shifted in the pews. Her mother started forward, but Ada lifted one hand and shook her head, and the whole church went still.

The old women in the fen villages had always said that a bride who would not speak was not refusing anyone. In the wet years, a ferryman named Hob had promised to row his bride across the drowned fields to his people, but she had lost her voice to a winter fever. On the wedding morning she made her answer with her hands, a fist with the thumb, first finger and little finger lifted, and Hob, who had watched the sluice men talk across the water all his life, read it and rowed her safely home. The fen folk have kept the sign ever since.

Tom Kettering had learned it from Ada at the sluice gate when they were nine and too young to be sensible about it. He had never once forgotten. Now he lifted his own hand in the aisle, slowly, the way a man steadies a boat, and made the same shape back to her. The vicar looked at the two hands and then at his book, and he read the vows out again with his voice a little softer.

The bells rang out over the drains that afternoon, one beat behind where they should have been, which the fen people say is good luck. Ada kept her hand in Tom's all the way down the path, the small dark mark on her palm turning pale as the sun went down over the water.
