Small black looped heart symbol tattoo
Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a single continuous black line forming a heart-like shape with a curled loop at the bottom. The linework is smooth and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame on lightly reddened skin, with the rest of the composition left plain.

The road out of Sallow Wells ran straight for forty miles, and nobody who drove it ever came back the same way. That was what the old carrier Benedek Hal told the new girl, Marra Quine, the spring she took over the water wagon. He said the road had a habit of folding. You went out past the salt pan, and by dusk the same wind-bent mesquite stood at your left hand again, as if the desert had pulled a loop in the map and tied it off.

Marra did not believe him until she had to. A dust storm took the light on the third day, and she kept the engine turning by feel, one hand on the wheel and one on the dash. When the air cleared she was looking at the well-house roof. She had driven one unbroken line out across the flats, and the line had curled back on itself like ribbon wound round a finger. Benedek was sitting on the tailgate, smoking, as if he had been waiting an hour.
'It only folds for people who stop before the bend,' he said. He held up a stub of charcoal. 'Keep the line in your head and never lift it. Lift it and the road forgets where it was.'
The next morning Marra drove out again with one thought running like a single stroke: the well, the well, the well. At the bottom of the loop, where the track bent hard and the heat shook above the bonnet, the road turned under her wheels, and she felt it close gently behind her. In the dust on the dashboard, where her thumb had traced the route without her noticing, she saw she had drawn a heart, and the tail of it ran home to the water.
