Luke 1:45 script lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A palm-up hand shows the words Luke 1:45 in black script lettering across the inner wrist, with the numerals set in a plainer upright style beside the script. The linework is solid and even, with the black ink looking crisp and slightly soft at the edges. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a dark fabric printed with cream daisy-like flowers, and the warm, slightly faded tone of the photograph gives the image a vintage feel.

The message had come across on the afternoon boat, folded small inside a fishmonger's wrapper, and it said only what the woman at the chandler's had promised: the Mercy was sighted off Skerrow, and the men aboard were alive.

Her father read it twice at the kitchen table and then pushed it back across the oilcloth as though it might burn him. "Mrs Lowrie's a liar when it suits her," he said. "She told your mother the same about the spring fleet."
Nell did not argue. She went up the spiral stairs, counting the iron rungs the way she always did, and at the gallery she lit the great lens early. The beam swung out over the water, pale and steady, and somewhere past the headland a single light answered it, low and yellow, then steadied and held.
Her father came up behind her, breathing hard, and stood looking at it without speaking. After a while he took the logbook from its hook and wrote the date, and under it, in his careful hand, the words she had been saying to herself all afternoon: believed, and so it came to pass.
