Luna moth tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A luna moth with green wings, pale cream body and long tails is shown across two photographs of the same inner forearm, one angled and one straight on. The wings are shaded with soft gradients and fine veining, with red-pink edging and orange eyespots adding contrast against the green. The plain white background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin around it.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop picking at those paper favours, because I am going to tell you about the night Nell Harrow was married under a moth as big as a dinner plate.

It was June, the year the hop bines grew faster than the men could train them, and the wedding was held in the big barn at Coldharbour Farm with every lamp we owned hung from the rafters. Nell wore her mother's cream silk, let out at the seams by Mrs Pell, who swore at every pin. Halfway through the vows, something came in through the open door and went straight for the nearest light. It was green, Nell's favourite colour, and its wings had long tails that trailed behind it like ribbon from a maypole. Everyone stopped. Even the vicar stopped, which I had never seen before or since.
My grandmother always said a moth that comes to a wedding is a promise that somebody in the room will keep their word. Nobody thought much of it until Harold Dunning, who had lied about his debts to half the parish, took off his hat and held it out. The moth walked onto the brim as if it had been asked. He carried it out into the lane, very gently, and the whole barn watched him through the doors. When he came back his face had changed, and he never told anyone what he said to it.
The moth was gone by the first dance, but it left a green powder on Nell's left glove. She wore that glove for forty years, until the stitching gave way, and then she kept it in a tin with her ring. When we cleared her cottage, the powder was still bright on the fingertips. So if you find a green thing at your lamp tonight, do not swat it. Open the door and let it go.
