Dreamcatcher with feathers on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a flower-like centre in pink and purple sits above three blue feathers hanging from a cross-strung ring. The black linework outlines the hoop, web and feathers, while soft blue and purple washes and splatter marks give a watercolour effect. The design is centred on a forearm against a plain light grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At ten past three the corridor on Ward 7 smells of hand gel and cold toast, and Mr Halloran has been awake since the bed was changed. He asks me for the small hoop his granddaughter left on the locker, a willow ring strung with cord and a flower of painted pink at its heart. I tell him nothing can hang from the drip stand. He tells me the hospital doesn't allow him to sleep either, so we are even.

I tie it to the rail with a strip of tape from the trolley. The web inside is loose and uneven, knotted by someone in a hurry, and the three feathers beneath it, blue as a swimming pool at dusk, lift every time the radiator ticks on. He watches them the way I watch the monitor. "The good dreams get caught," he says, "and the bad ones fall through the holes. My wife believed that. I believed it for a while, to keep her happy."

He talks about the allotment and a dog called Biscuit until his words slow down. The flower in the middle catches the light from the corridor, and I think it looks more like a window than a bloom. I check his line, adjust the pillow, and write the obs on my clipboard without looking at the clock.

At six the day staff come in with their clatter and their trolleys of tea. Mr Halloran is asleep with one hand open on the blanket. The tape has curled at one corner, and the feathers are still moving in the draught from the vent, so I leave the hoop where it is.
