Lyric lettering along the shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black script-style tattoo reading "You'll never walk alone", set diagonally from the top of the shoulder down towards the upper arm. The letters are solid black with clean, even outlines and no shading. The skin is lightly toned, with a faint reddish line across the collarbone, and a zebra-print pattern sits in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Okonedo never let me touch the gold leaf until my third winter, so I spent those months in the back of the workshop on Dock Street, lettering practice boards with a sable brush and a pot of black enamel. He said a letter was only honest if its outline was clean enough to bear weight, and he would hold each board up to the window and squint at it like a jeweller.

The commission that spring came from Mrs Pargeter, who ran the chandlery at the end of the quay and wanted a name painted along the top of her husband's fishing coble, the one that had not come back in. She didn't say what the words should be. She only handed over a folded slip of paper with a line copied out in pencil, and asked whether we could fit it on the curve of the bow without cramping it.

We could not fit it straight, so Okonedo laid the letters on a slant, climbing from the stern towards the stem like a man walking uphill. I worked the lower edge while he did the capitals. When the last stroke dried, he wiped his hands, looked at the slope for a long while, and said nothing about it being good, which from him was a kind of praise.

Mrs Pargeter came down at dusk, read the words twice with her lips moving, and paid in coins she had counted into a handkerchief. She asked me to hold the ladder. Afterwards I noticed the boat still sat in its cradle when the tide went out, the black letters dry and sharp against the grey hull, and I thought it looked less like a name than a promise.
