Black script lettering reading "This too shall pass" across the upper chest of a woman in a dark low-cut top, styled in a flowing lettering style.

Script quote across the upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop shows black script lettering that reads "This too shall pass", set in a flowing, connected hand across the upper chest near the collarbone. The linework is bold and solid with no shading, and the ink is dark black. The photo is taken at an angle with the subject's face and head cropped out, and the skin tone and dark top give the tattoo strong contrast.

Dear Mags, the ferry was cancelled again on Tuesday, so I have been stuck on Inish Varra with nothing but the lighthouse keeper's cat and a tin of your mother's shortbread for company. The keeper, Old Tom Dunphy, reads the weather off a brass barometer that has not moved in forty years, and he tells me that is how you know it is honest. I told him I was starting to feel the same about the boat timetable.

Yesterday I walked the whole length of the island to the old chapel, where somebody had scratched a line of writing into the lintel above the door. The letters were worn almost smooth, but the words were clear enough: this too shall pass. Tom says a fisherman carved it after his brother drowned off the north rocks, and that the whole village has argued for a century about whether it was a comfort or an insult. I sat on the wall for an hour and decided it was a bit of both, which is probably the most honest thing anyone has ever said to me on this island.

I am posting this with the mail boat on Friday, if the wind holds. Tell Dad I have not fallen off any cliffs. Tell him the cat has taken to sleeping on my feet, and I have decided that counts as company. If the ferry runs, I will be home by the weekend, and you can tell me all about the wedding and whether Gerry finally wore the awful yellow tie.

Love, Nell
