The lift at Tanner House had been broken since March, so Nadia and I took the stairs to the fourteenth floor every morning, counting the landings out loud like it was a race nobody had entered us for. Mr Okafor from flat 9 called it the stairs of shame. Our mums called it exercise, which was the same thing said more politely.

Coach Pryce turned up in the spring term with a stopwatch, a clipboard and a face like a wet Tuesday. He lined us up on the cinder track behind the school and told the boys at the fence to shut up. Then a lad from Year Ten shouted that we ran like a girl, and the whole fence laughed, and Nadia stopped dead and looked at me.

So we ran like girls. We ran the whole way round, elbows going, past the bins and the fence and the bloke with the Alsatian, and by the fourth lap the laughter had gone thin and then gone altogether. Pryce wrote something down on his clipboard. I never saw what.

Nadia won the county heat that June by a full length. Afterwards she wrote the phrase in biro on a sheet of lined paper and pinned it above our kitchen sink, in the same loopy writing she used for birthday cards, and said it was for the fence. I never told her it still works on the stairs, fourteen floors up, when my legs are done and the window on the landing is the only thing left to aim for.
