Made in Brasil text on ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a small line of capitalised text, MADE IN BRASIL, set in a typewriter-style serif font. The letters are crisp, evenly spaced and tattooed in a dark red ink across the ankle, with the lower leg and foot visible. The plain, light skin and pale background keep the focus on the lettering.

The typewriter in the back of the assay office has a sticking e, and you have learned to strike it twice with the heel of your hand before every crate. Outside, the red dust of the hill settles on the tin roofs of Vila Tomás like a second skin, and the lorries grind down the switchback road under their loads of ore. Senhor Albuquerque says the stamps must be crisp, because a buyer in Rotterdam will judge the whole mountain by the sharpness of a single word.

Each evening you wipe the ink pad with a rag, and the rag comes away red. The old man's grandson shows you how to set the letters in their slots, MADE IN BRASIL, one strike on the pine lid of every crate, and you learn to press just firmly enough that the words come out clean on the first hit. Your fingers stain at the cuticles. Nobody in the village minds. The colour is simply what the work looks like.
Then, in the wet season, the road washes out and the lorries stop coming. The crates pile up under the tarpaulin, stamped and waiting. One night you lift the lid of the last crate and find a pebble of pale quartz pressed into the corner, with a scrap of paper folded around it. The note is in careful capitals, asking whoever stamps these to write down the name of the person who dug the stone.
You take the pad and the smallest type set, and beneath the country you strike your own name in the same clean letters. Then you close the lid and go home through the rain.
