The snow had come over the Col de Varnay before anyone expected it, and by the second hour the mule had stopped arguing. Agnes Brannock walked at its head with the lead rope wound twice around her glove, counting the cairns she could still see. Behind her, the four men from the Pell farm had stopped talking about turning back and started talking about whose fault it was that they were there.

She had a sack of salt cod, a tin of lamp oil, and a bundle of letters for the keeper at Sorrel Hut, and she had no intention of leaving any of them to the wolves. Her coat had been her mother's, cut down twice, and along its hem she had stitched in red thread the words the minister's wife had taught her when she was small: strength and honour are her clothing. Nobody on the pass asked her about it. They only watched her fingers go stiff trying to tie a knot in the cold.

At the top the wind tore the rope from her hand, and the mule went over the lip of the ridge in a slide of grey powder. Agnes went after it on her backside, shouting, and fetched up on a shelf of rock beside the animal, which had somehow stopped with its legs braced and its ears flat. The men came down roped together and found her laughing, snow down her collar and the lamp oil still whole.

Each spring the mules are walked up to that shelf, and each spring someone ties a red thread to the gatepost at Sorrel Hut, for no reason anyone will admit to.
