Magenta and blue galaxy on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm tattoo of a galaxy or nebula, built from magenta, purple and blue washes with scattered white star points. The soft, bleeding edges and paint-like drips suggest a watercolour effect rather than hard outlines. Colour dominates the composition, which is framed against a plain dark background.

Four nights out from Skelling and the herring had not come. The boats of the fleet lay strung across the black water like beads on a wet cord, and the men had stopped counting empty hauls. On the fifth night Old Ada's grandson Pell hauled the net over the gunwale and swore the weight was the sea itself. What came up was a knot of cloud the colour of ripe plums, tangled through the mesh. It was warm, and where it touched the wet deck it hissed.

Nobody aboard the Morag wanted it. Pell picked the threads free with his bare fingers anyway, and each one he freed let loose a spill of blue, like ink dropped in milk, that ran down the planks and off the scuppers into the sea. Where the blue went, the water lit from beneath. Shoals rose to it in silver ribbons. By dawn the whole fleet was trailing its nets through a sky that had come down to drink.
Pell kept one thread, a single magenta drip no longer than his thumb, and tied it to the mast. Ada said the sea would want it back. He said the sea could ask him itself. The herring came every night after that. On clear nights you can still see the drip from the harbour wall, a plum-coloured smudge high on the mast, and the loose stars drifting above Skelling like sparks looking for the sky they fell from.
