Purple fish with green eye on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A purple fish with a large green eye and long, flowing fins curves upwards along the leg. Smooth shading gives the body a rounded, three-dimensional look, while the fins are rendered in soft lilac tones. A blue splash behind the fish adds depth and balances the composition against the purple.

Mind the step, it's worn smooth, the brothers have walked it for three hundred years. Sit closer. The fish I want you to hear about lived in the cistern under the north cloister, where rain came off the slates and pooled blue in the stone. Brother Anselm fed it crumbs from his bread every morning, and it grew until it could not turn in the basin without its long fins brushing the sides, lilac as the dusk over the hills.

Now, the abbot of that house was a careful man who counted everything: the candles, the bells, the pennies from wool sold at Lent. He did not like a thing in his cistern that he could not count. One evening he came down with a lantern and found the fish looking up at him with its one great green eye, the colour of new bracken, and he swore afterwards that it winked. He ordered the basin drained by Sunday. Anselm wept into his sleeve, and that night the fish slipped up the drain pipe, past the scullery, into the river that runs under the mill.
Some say the abbot searched the river for a month. What he found, when the spring floods came, was a little pool lying in the lee of the bridge, still and clear, and on its surface a single lilac fin rising to take the bread he threw. He never counted it again. Brother Anselm said the eye had seen the abbot's lantern and decided, out of kindness, to see nothing more. That is the end of it, and the bread is gone, so go to bed.
