Magnifying glass and quill in a triangle
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A triangular design holds a magnifying glass, a quill pen and a tube-shaped object, with a feather at the base and script lettering running up the left edge. The shapes are outlined in black and filled with smooth grey shading, with light highlights on the glass lens and the quill. The design is shown alone on plain skin with no other colour.

The sign above the stage still read WELCOME BACK, FORM 4B, though the paint had flaked from the B. Dennis Oakes found the lost property tin behind the piano where Mr Harlow had always kept it, its lid dented, a strip of masking tape across the front in capitals: UNCLAIMED. AWAY.

Inside lay the things nobody had come for. A brass-rimmed magnifying glass. A quill stripped to its nib. A cardboard spyglass gone soft at the seams. One grey feather, curled like a question mark. Each had a slip of paper tucked beneath it, dated and initialled in Harlow's cramped hand. Dennis read them aloud to the half-empty room, and people drifted over with their paper plates.
The glass had gone to a boy who searched the playground for a stag beetle and never found it. The quill belonged to a girl who wrote letters to the caretaker in Latin. The spyglass was signed out to Dennis himself, the spring term of 1987, the week he had climbed the bell tower and been sent home. He had never come back for it. The feather's slip bore only one name, Ruth Calloway, and four words: Keep until she asks.
Ruth was at the back by the urn, grey at the temples and laughing at something on her phone. Dennis crossed the hall with the feather held up between two fingers. She looked at it for a long time before she said, "I've been away a long while," and held out her hand.
