Magnolia branch tattoo design sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a slender branch with two magnolia flowers, one open near the top and a larger bloom lower down, plus several closed buds and small leaves. It is rendered in fine, confident black ink linework with light hatching in the petals and no shading or colour. The sketch sits centred on a sheet of torn paper on a wooden desk, with a pencil, a notebook and a pen nearby.

The Carrow and Dunmore Travelling Circus went into winter quarters for the last time in October, two lorries and a horsebox loaded in the rain. Nobody thought to dig up the magnolia. Dad had planted it the spring I was born, in the corner of the winter field where the fen wind could not reach it, and by the time the tent was sold it stood higher than the big top's centre pole and had never once managed to flower on schedule.

Mr Teague came over from the caravans with his greasepaint still on, half the white gone from one cheek. He said the buyers from Peterborough wanted the ground cleared by Friday, and I said I knew, and he said that wasn't what he meant. We stood there a while. Forty years he had been falling over for children, and now his hands shook worse than the branches in the wind.
In March, when the lorries were long gone and I was living in the back of the horsebox with a kettle and a dog, the buds came. They were tight and grey, pointed like paintbrushes, and then one morning there were white cups opening on bare wood with not a single leaf to shelter them. Mr Teague always said the show went on whatever the weather, and I used to think he meant the people. I took the pruning saw from the shed, cut a branch with two blooms on it, wrapped the cut end in damp newspaper, and carried it out to the road where the new owners' van was waiting.
