Botanical sprig arc design sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows fern fronds and small flowering sprigs curving in an open teardrop-like arc on a white background. The linework is fine and detailed, with shading built up through hatching and light pencil construction lines still visible along the outer edge. The image is black and grey only, with a black pen lying at the upper right of the composition.

Dear Ruth, the fern has finally come through the wall of the chapel roof, so Father says we must either mend it or let it have the whole nave. I have chosen to let it have the nave. Mrs Pellow brought round a jar of blackberry jam this morning and said the boats were late again, that the Mary Ann had lost her second anchor off the Gull Rock and Tom Coad swears he saw a seal wearing a hat. You will think I am making that up, but I am only writing down what the village says.

I went down to the slip yesterday with the pencil case you left in the dresser drawer, and sat on the upturned crab pot while the tide came in over the steps. The sprigs on the lichen wall had gone to seed in that odd way they do in October, all tiny white clusters, and I tried to draw the curve of them the way you used to, bending the stems so they seemed to lean toward the water. I got the outer line wrong three times. Each time I rubbed it out with my thumb the sea came up a little further, as if it was keeping count.
The boats came in at dusk after all. The Mary Ann was low in the water but had her crew, and Tom was mostly sober, and when Father saw her lights round the point he took off his cap and stood there in the rain holding it. I think he had given up on the chapel too. I will tell you the rest when you are home, because there is a thing about the fern I have not worked out yet, and I would rather puzzle over it with you than alone.
Your loving sister, Nell
